Biography

Bali is the founder and editor in chief of the Opera and Ballet newspaper of the State Opera and Ballet Directorate of Turkey since 2011. Writing for the national press for over 10 years, Bali has also been the classical music columnist of the Radikal newspaper in Turkey since 2002. Also working as an editor in the music publishing field, Bali was the editor of pianist Fazıl Say’s latest book in Turkish named Yalnızlık Kederi-The Sadness of Loneliness. As an active radio producer, after working in Turkish Radio Television-TRT for several years, he now spends his time in producing and presenting music programs on Borusan Klasik, a 24 hours classical music radio channel in Istanbul. Bali took part in the advisory board of the Istanbul Music Festival between the years 2007-2009. During the previous years Serhan Bali has been an active participator in the meetings, conferences, panels all over the world in which the rich classical music tradition and the active classical music life in Turkey is being assessed. One of these recent meetings was organized by the BBC Radio 3 on 29th of July, 2014 in the Royal College of Music where Bali was one of the panelists talking about the recent developments in the classical music life of his country with good and bad aspects. Alongside the editorship of the Andante, Serhan Bali continues to write for the national and international press including the Opera magazine of UK of which he’s a regular contributor from Turkey. He’s also the presenter and scriptwriter of a documentary series on the Turkish channel IZ TV which has the topic of great composers and their birth cities.

Who is Serhan Bali?

Born in Ankara in 1973, Serhan Bali, after graduating from the Political Science and International Relations department of Istanbul University in 1995, finished his master thesis in the field of late diplomatic history of the Ottoman Empire. After working several years as a professional in the private sector, he began publishing the only nationwide classical music periodical in Turkey named Andante in 2002. As both the publisher and the editor in chief of Andante, Serhan Bali, alongside other respected editors and classical music journalists of several European countries, is among the jury members of the International Classical Music Awards-ICMA (www.icma-info.com) which gives awards to the best classical music recordings every year.

In his presentation, “Wars of Men, Men of War,” Coşkun Aral blends his stories with images of events and people he encountered during his career as a war correspondent and documentary producer. His impressive presentation is masterfully complemented by his speech, in which he emphasizes that there is a way to achieve everything even if the goals seem impossible.

Who is Coşkun Aral?

Coşkun Aral was born in 1956 in Siirt. He started his professional career as a press photographer in 1974. His name spread across the globe via Sipa Press thanks to his photographs of Turkey’s “Bloody May 1st, 1977”. He worked as Sipa Press’ Turkey reporter as well as as a freelance photographer for a number of Turkish media outlets, such as Turkish News Agency, Milliyet and Hürriyet. He started photographing wars in countries such as Lebanon, Iran, Iraq, Afghanistan, Northern Ireland, Chad and the Far East in 1980. In 1980 he conducted the first ever interview in history with the hijackers of a hijacked airplane. He is the founder of İZ TV, the first ever Turkish documentary channel. Aral continues to work as a war photographer for periodicals such as Time, Newsweek, Paris-Match, Stern and Epoca. He also continues to work as the producer of his TV documentary program, Haberci.

Chef Ebru Baybara Demir, the winner of the 2023 Basque Culinary World Prize (BCWP), which is called the Nobel of the gastronomy, became the first chef to bring this honoured award to Turkey. Recognized for her remarkable contributions to social gastronomy over the past two decades, Chef Baybara Demir has been acknowledged for her innovative solutions to societal challenges and needs, especially the socioeconomic repercussions of the migrant crisis, combating the impact of climate change on soil rejuvenation, and promoting local development through the perspective of gastronomy. Prior to her first prize, Chef Baybara Demir was ranked among the top 10 best chefs in the world at the Basque Culinary World Prize two consecutive years.

Ebru Baybara Demir has moved to Mardin in 1999 after completed her bachelor’s degree in Marmara University, Department of Tourism Management. Ebru Baybara Demir took the road to Mardin with a dream to meet the city with tourism and established the very first touristic restaurant in Mardin by the change she created, Cercis Murat Konağı, with twenty-one women who believed in her.  Demir, who has conducted extensive research on Anatolian cuisine for more than 15 years, has made many social gastronomy projects happen in the region, especially in Mardin, beyond being a chef, with the philosophy of “The taste of the meal on the table comes from the soil it takes and from the lives it benefits”. Within this period, she achieved loads of prizes on both national and international levels. She presented Turkey in World Gastronomy Tourism Forum held by UNWTO and 5th Food on the Edge Summit that brought gastronomy elites and authorities together via the projects she conducted in the field. Realizing the firsts in the field of social gastronomy with measurable results, Demir also draws attention to the creation of sustainable local economies from the protection of the natural balance of seed, soil and water in its projects, and the ability to create a livelihood for everyone who works from the process in which the product reaches the consumer from the soil. Ebru Baybara Demir, under the roof of Soil to Plate Agricultural Development Cooperative, of which she is among the founders of Mesopotamia’s oldest wheat, Sorgul Wheat, Şemim Soaps, El Ele Elden Ele (Hand in Hand) Store and online sales platform, as well as local products with new initiatives to be implemented in a short time. She continues to work for the ideal cooperative model that brings together local cuisine and local human resources to create a role model in the national and international arena.

Ebru Baybara Demir carries out the Biodegradable Waste Project, which started in Diyarbakır and spread to many provinces of the country under the “We Are Healing Life” motto. “Biodegradable Waste Management Project from Soil to Soil” is a regenerative agriculture project that includes improving the soil, supporting the farmer and contributing to the production of healthy food by transform the biodegradable food waste consisting of vegetables and fruits in the market into compost. Within the scope of the project, the usable foods collected in the marketplaces are brought to the soup kitchens and inspected under the supervision of a food engineer and are used with a 2-stage production as “Canned and Packaged Products” and “Hot Meal Production”.

She is the only Turkish Chef that her documentary “12 Zero-Waste Chefs of the World” was made by HBO Max which is American online content platform. Ebru Baybara Demir was awarded the Aenne Burda Creative Leadership Award at the DLD Munich Conference held in January 2023. Demir has been presented to women with brave, optimistic, innovative, creative and inspiring qualities since 2006.

Celal Seçkin is a graduate of Electrical and Electronics Engineering Department of the Middle East Technical University, Ankara, Turkey. He worked as an engineer and manager in PTT ARLA (TELETAŞ) and Siemens for 17 years.

He has undergone a variety of business excellence, management and leadership training programmes and has attended many national and international symposia, congresses and forums in the field of quality and organisational excellence as speaker, moderator and organiser

He worked at Turkish Society for Quality (KalDer) in 1998-2000, as Manager of the National Quality Awards Program and four years at the European Foundation for Quality Management (EFQM) in Oct 2000-Dec 2004, as Manager of the European Quality Awards Program (now known as EFQM Excellence Award) and worked as part of the development team for the EFQM recognition scheme “EFQM Levels of Excellence”, revision of EFQM Model and development of EFQM training programs.

As a qualified EFQM Excellence Assessment Team leader, he has participated and led numerous organisational excellence assessments both in public and private sectors in many countries. As a member of the EFQM Faculty, he has trained many hundreds of assessors in many countries.

Celal Seçkin is founder of Seçkin Consulting and Training Co. Ltd, a Turkey-based company in management consultancy covering organisational performance management, internal/external assessments, leadership, change management, strategic planning, process management, continuous improvement and teamwork.

He took part as an instructor in Professional certification programs jointly organised by KalDer and Bosphorus, Sabancı and Okan Universities.

“Nanotechnology is going to change our lives. All we have seen so far of nanotechnology are prototypes. Numerous R&D projects are underway across the world, and significant budgets are being allocated for this.”

Gülsen Çeliker is a founding partner of Innov’coat which carries out projects for Turkey’s leading corporations working with or producing ceramics, white appliances, glass, aluminium and carpets. Since 2010, these companies have been able to offer innovative and multi-functional products in the market place thanks to the materials and coatings developed by Innov’coat. These products are also approved by international companies. These companies introduce these new materials through R&D alliances.

Çeliker takes an active role in her company’s collaborative projects on nanotechnology with various universities. As such, her company represents an important model in terms of university-industry cooperation. She considers that universities, government and the private sector should all unite around the “nanotechnology strategy.” Firmly believing that advanced technology will shape our lives in the future, Çeliker seeks to expand our horizons with several examples: future cars will be of different materials and have increased resistance against crashing. The cleanliness of ambient air will be controlled. Clothes will be cleaned by mere exposure to a UV lamp, which will eliminate the use of harmful chemicals used in cleaning. Actually, the essence of the matter is this: nanotechnology will change our lives. What we have seen, heard and lived so far is only the results of initial studies. A great number of R&D studies are being carried out all over the world; significant budgets are being allocated for advanced technology. Researchers like Çeliker are opening the doors to the future for us.

Who is Gülsen Çeliker?

Gülsen Çeliker received her Bachelor’s, Master’s and doctorate degrees in chemical engineering from the Middle East Technical University (ODTU). She worked as a research assistant at ODTU between 1982 and 1987. She started her industrial career in Akzo Nobel as a research specialist. She transferred to Dyo in 1995. She first worked as a manager in the automotive and industrial paints section, followed by an assistant general manager position at Yaşar BASF, where she formed the R&D and quality team. She served as the R&D coordinator at the Yaşar Paint and Chemistry Group between 2004 and 2009. In 2009 Çeliker established her own company which develops, manufactures and sells nanotechnology coating and materials by entering into a partnership with Materis, Europe’s third largest paint company. Çeliker, currently, creates projects and develops innovative products for industrial firms each of which are a leader in their own sector.

Biography

He graduated from Istanbul Technical University with BSc in Civil Engineering in 2004 and with MSc in Transportation Engineering in 2006.

Along with his engineering career which spanned 5 years from 2004 thru 2009, he published various videos on a YouTube channel that he started under the name of Batesmotelpro in 2006.

Thanks to the great interest and on-line activity by the channel, he created some of Turkey’s first commercialized viral digital video projects for major businesses.

In 2009, he made a career shift and started working as a copywriter at the advertising agency 41?29! where he wrote scripts for a period of 4 years and simultaneously continued to create his own video projects at Batesmotelpro.

In 2012, he wrote and starred in a comedy motion picture called “Patlak Sokaklar”.

With the funding he received after the release of “Patlak Sokaklar” he converted the Batesmotelpro channel into a digital video agency and created numerous digital video ads. This online media firm actively continues to create acclaimed digital ad content for a wide range of commercial clients, all with a unique sense of humor.

Together with his business partner Tolga Akış, he also founded the new media company “Hypers” in 2017, which operates in the field of influencer marketing, YouTube and other digital content creation and currently is the Creative Director for “Hypers”.

In 2019, he started his own Youtube channel “Volkan Öge Geliyor” where he continues to publish his individual videos and musical work.

Dilek Cindoğlu,

Biography

Previously, she worked at Mardin Artuklu University and Bilkent University. She is a graduate of Bogazici University, Istanbul (B.A. and M.A.) and received her Ph.D. (1991) State University of New York at Buffalo. She has published extensively on the gendered processes of paid work, political participation, migration, health and sexuality in international journals and in book chapters. She was a Visiting Senior Scholar at the IRWAG of the Columbia University of New York (2010-2011), received, “Direct Access to the Muslim World” award from the Fulbright Visiting Specialist Program (2006) was a Visiting Fellow at the Center for Gender and Sexuality at the NYU (2003),and Senior Fellow at St. Antony’s College, Oxford (2002), was a Fulbright scholar at the University of Wisconsin, Madison (1998-1999).She was consultant on various research projects funded by national (Tubitak, KSSGM, AAK) and international (IDRC, Ford Foundation, World Bank, ILO-IPEC,EU) bodies, served as an elected EC member at Turkish Sociological Association, (TSA) 2008-2014 and International Sociological Association (ISA) 2010-2018. Her work has been published at national and international academic journals and as book chapters.
